Spring in Chicago Brings Out the Bikes

As Chicago finally thaws out after another long winter, the streets begin to change. Warmer temperatures mean more pedestrians, more outdoor activity, and importantly, a sharp increase in bicyclists sharing the road. For drivers across Chicago, this seasonal shift brings new risks and responsibilities.

At Zneimer & Zneimer P.C., a Chicago plaintiff’s personal injury law firm, this is the time of year when we unfortunately begin to see more bike-related injuries, many of which are entirely preventable.

More Bikes, More Risk

Bicyclists return to the streets in large numbers in the spring and summer. Whether commuting, exercising, or just enjoying the weather, they often ride in close proximity to motor vehicles. Unlike drivers, cyclists have little protection, which means even a minor mistake by a motorist can lead to serious injury.

Two of the most common causes of bike accidents in Chicago are:

  • Right or left turns into cyclists
  • “Dooring” incidents (opening a car door into a cyclist’s path)

Watch Before You Turn

Chicago drivers must be especially cautious when making turns—particularly at intersections and when crossing bike lanes.

Under Chicago traffic laws:

  • Drivers must yield to cyclists when turning.
  • A bike traveling straight has the right of way over a turning vehicle.

Too often, drivers focus only on oncoming traffic and fail to check bike lanes or mirrors. A quick glance is not enough—cyclists can approach faster than expected.

Tip: Before turning, check your mirrors, look over your shoulder, and be aware of designated bike lanes.

“Dooring” Is Illegal—and Dangerous

Chicago municipal code (Section 9-80-035) prohibits opening a vehicle door into traffic unless it is reasonably safe to do so. Violations can result in fines—and more importantly, liability if someone is injured.

Drivers should:

  • Look carefully for approaching cyclists before opening any door
  • Use mirrors and a full visual check—not just a quick glance
  • Warn passengers to do the same when exiting the vehicle

Dooring accidents often lead to severe injuries because cyclists are thrown directly into traffic.

Bike Lanes Are Not Just Suggestions

Chicago has expanded its network of protected and marked bike lanes in recent years. These lanes are legally designated spaces for cyclists.

Drivers should remember:

  • Do not drive, park, or idle in bike lanes
  • Always check for cyclists before crossing a bike lane to turn or park
  • Be especially cautious in areas with protected lanes, where cyclists may be less visible

Shared Responsibility, Serious Consequences

While cyclists must also follow traffic laws, the reality is that motorists control the more dangerous vehicle. Courts and juries often recognize this imbalance when determining fault in injury cases.

When drivers fail to:

  • Yield while turning
  • Check before opening doors
  • Respect bike lanes

…the consequences can include serious injuries such as fractures, head trauma, and long-term disability.

A Seasonal Reminder from Zneimer & Zneimer P.C.

As the weather improves, it’s worth adjusting driving habits to reflect the increased presence of cyclists. A few extra seconds of awareness can prevent life-altering injuries—and potential legal liability.

If you or someone you know has been injured in a bicycle accident in Chicago, the attorneys at Zneimer & Zneimer P.C. can help evaluate your case and determine whether negligence played a role.

Spring in Chicago should be about enjoying the city, not navigating preventable accidents. Stay alert, share the road, and remember: cyclists are someone’s neighbor, coworker, or family member.
